Step 1: Get your usage in front of the AI.

Pull your last two or three utility bills, whichever ones you're trying to figure out, electric, gas, or propane. If your utility has an online dashboard, a screenshot of your usage history works too. You don't need to retype anything by hand. Most AI chatbots now read images and PDFs directly.

One wrinkle if you use propane: there's no live meter to check, since it's delivered rather than metered. Use your delivery receipts instead and let AI estimate gallons used per month from those.

Step 2: Ask it to explain the increase in plain English.

Open ChatGPT, Claude, or your AI tool of choice, upload the bills, and ask it to find the pattern.

"Here are my last three utility bills. Look at how my usage changed month to month and tell me the three most likely reasons my bill went up, in plain English."

This is where AI earns its keep. It will spot things a quick glance at a bill won't: a jump that lines up with a heat wave or cold snap, a spike in a specific usage category, a pattern you'd never catch comparing a handful of numbers by eye.

Step 3: Ask for fixes, ranked by what actually saves money.

Not every fix is worth the effort. Ask AI to sort them for you.

"Based on what's driving my bill up, give me a short list of fixes ranked by how much money each one would actually save me, starting with anything free."

Two fixes tend to top these lists, and both are free: closing your blinds during peak afternoon heat, and swapping out a filthy HVAC filter. Everything bigger, sealing drafts, a smart thermostat, better attic insulation, comes after, with a rough payback timeline attached so you know what's actually worth spending on.

Step 4: Turn it into a habit, not a one-time check.

Ask AI to build you a simple monthly tracker so you're not starting from zero every billing cycle, and so you can see electric, gas, or propane side by side if you're tracking more than one.

"Set up a simple monthly log I can update with my utility usage and bill amounts, so I can track whether these changes are actually working."

Five minutes a month beats a surprise bill every time.
