The AI Water Number We Repeated Was Off by 97%
You have probably seen the claim: writing one short email with AI drinks a bottle of water. It came from real research. It is no longer what that researcher says.
The 519 milliliter figure came from a 2024 Washington Post project with UC Riverside. Shaolei Ren, the researcher behind it, now puts a GPT-4 prompt closer to 15 milliliters, with about 5 of those going to on-site cooling. He calls his original estimate outdated for today's systems. Sam Altman puts an average ChatGPT query at roughly a third of a milliliter.
The part worth worrying about never got a viral headline. Data centers do not draw water evenly. Peak demand can run 6 to 30 times the annual average, and researchers at UC Riverside and Caltech estimate US water systems may need 10 to 58 billion dollars in new infrastructure by 2030 to handle it. That bill lands on local ratepayers, not on the companies building the data centers. Full breakdown in Forbes.
