Good morning. I’ve said this before, but I barely type anymore, on my desktop or my phone. Today's lead is about why talking to AI beats typing to it, and the tutorial covers something I've built out for myself: a custom AI assistant that already knows how I write, how I speak, and what I actually want.
AI INSIGHT
AI Voice Mode Is the Feature Nobody Talks About
Nearly half of AI users now talk to it at least some of the time instead of typing. A 2026 consumer AI survey from Menlo Ventures found 19 percent use voice as their primary way of interacting with AI, and another 27 percent move back and forth between voice and typing depending on the task.
I'm one of them now. Between the microphone built into ChatGPT and Claude and a dedicated tool called Wispr Flow that works across my whole computer and phone, I barely type anything anymore, emails, prompts, this newsletter. It didn't just make me faster. It made working with AI something I actually enjoy.
Typing filters out detail because typing is slow. Talking doesn't. A rambling, specific, out-loud explanation gives AI more to work with than the clipped version you'd bother typing, which is probably why the people using it most report better results, not just faster ones.
The catch: voice input still stumbles on names, numbers, and technical terms. Glance over anything AI wrote down from what you said before you send it anywhere that matters.
If you've never tried talking to AI instead of typing to it, that's this week's whole assignment. Tap the microphone icon and just start talking.

How to Build Your Own Custom GPT or Personal AI Assistant

I've connected ChatGPT to my email, built out custom skills, and loaded both ChatGPT and Claude with enough reference material that they know how I write, how I speak, and what I actually want, without me repeating myself every time.
1. Pick one clear, recurring job for this assistant: drafting your emails, managing a specific project, or just knowing your preferences across every chat.
2. In ChatGPT, create a Custom GPT (or a Project in Claude) and give it a name and a short description of its one job.
3. Upload three to five reference files that show what "good" looks like: past emails, writing samples, or notes on how you like things done.
4. Write instructions in plain language: your role, your tone, what to always do, what to never do.
5. Test it with a real task, then correct anything off. Each correction is worth saving back into its instructions.
Try This With AI What it does: Sets up a focused AI assistant that already knows your writing, your preferences, and its one job, instead of starting from scratch every conversation.
"Act as a setup assistant. Help me create a custom AI assistant for [the one job, e.g., drafting my emails]. Ask me what tone and style I want, what reference material I should upload, and what it should always or never do. Then write the full instructions for me to paste into a Custom GPT or Project."
Customize it: Name the one job clearly before you start. A custom assistant built around five jobs does none of them well. |
If it does not work: A custom assistant that ignores its own instructions usually has too many jobs or contradictory ones. Cut it down to one job and try again.
What this doesn't fix: Connecting an assistant to your email or calendar is a real access decision, not just a convenience one. Only connect what you're genuinely comfortable with it seeing.

REAL WORLD
How To Use AI This Week
Real people, real uses—here’s how AI is quietly making life better, one small win at a time.

Teach Your AI How You Actually Talk
🎙️ Voice-Dictated Preference Profile. "Act as a personalization assistant. I'm going to talk through how I like things done instead of typing it out. Ask me about my tone preferences, formatting habits, and the kinds of mistakes I want you to always catch. Turn what I say into a clear, written preference profile I can paste into a Custom GPT, Claude Project, or your own memory settings, so I only have to explain this once. Read it back to me once so I can correct anything before I save it anywhere." ◆ Try in ChatGPT ◆ Try in Claude
