Pew Research found 44% of American adults have used ChatGPT, versus 24% for Gemini and 6% for Claude. Most people pick one early and stop looking. That is a habit, not a fit problem.
Images: Claude's own documentation confirms it does not generate photos or illustrations, only diagrams and charts. ChatGPT and Gemini both generate real images.
Writing and long documents: Anthropic and Google both now offer roughly a million-token capacity on their top tiers, a gap that used to clearly favor one side and no longer does. What still matters is whether the tool still writes the way you want it to, not raw capacity. I tested this on my own long drafts and Claude held up better. Test it on yours before taking my word for it.
Research: all three companies shipped a dedicated deep research mode with citations within five months of each other. The real variable isn't which has the feature. It's whether you click the sources it hands you, and value them.
Planning: no real data favors one tool here yet. Use whichever one you actually prefer.
Sensitive decisions, a lease, a diagnosis, a big purchase: a recent Economist/YouGov poll found Americans are twice as likely to call themselves AI pessimists as opposed to optimists. That skepticism is earned. Slow down regardless of the tool you use.
The catch: Most of this will shift to a new tool within the year. Test before you trust and and go all-in on your choice.

Find the Side Income in What You Already Know How to Do
You already know how to do something other people would pay for. You just have not been asked the right questions yet.
This is not a hustle-culture pitch. It is an AI conversation, structured like an interview, that surfaces a real idea from the experience you already have: thirty years in a trade, a hobby you have gotten scary good at, or the thing your friends already call you for, for free. This works better the more you have lived, not despite it. Someone doing this exercise at twenty-five is guessing. You are pulling from a real history.

Try This With AI What it does: Turns one honest conversation about your background into one specific, realistic income idea, not a generic list. "I want you to interview me like an experienced career counselor with real curiosity, not a corporate one. Ask me one question at a time about my work history, my hobbies, the things I am unusually good at that I do not think of as a skill, and the things people already ask me for help with for free. After at least five questions, stop and give me exactly one realistic side income idea based on what I told you, not a list. Include what my first paying customer might realistically look like and roughly how many hours a week it would take to start." Customize it: If it stalls after two questions, tell it to keep going until it has at least five real answers before it proposes anything. |
If it does not work: If it hands you something generic, like "become a consultant" or "start a blog," before you have really answered anything, tell it plainly that is too generic and ask for a sharper question. It usually course-corrects on the second try. If it keeps landing on an idea that needs a license or certification you do not have, that is your cue to verify before you spend a weekend on it, not a reason to assume the idea is wrong.
What this doesn't fix: It will not tell you whether the idea is legal, properly licensed, or worth real money in your market. That part still takes a person, namely you, testing it against one real customer and seeing if they actually pay.
