Good morning.
Most people I talk to have a box of old family photos they have been meaning to do something with for years. The topic kept coming up, so I went looking for what AI could actually do about it. What I found was worth sharing.

4 Steps to Restore Faded Family Photos Using AI (Free Tools, No Skills Required)

Janet found the box in her mother's closet during a weekend visit. Old photos, some dating back to the 1950s, most of them faded, cracked, and spotted with age. She took a handful home telling herself she'd do something with them someday.

Someday turned out to be a Tuesday afternoon and about 45 minutes.

Restoring old family photos used to mean expensive professional services or Photoshop skills most of us never developed. AI has changed that math completely. You can take a faded, scratched print and come out with something worth framing. Here is how to do it.

Step 1: Get a clean digital copy

AI tools work on digital files, not physical prints, so the first job is a good scan.

The best option is a flatbed scanner set to at least 600 DPI. If you do not own one, CVS and Walgreens both offer in-store scanning services. The fast option is your smartphone. Shoot in bright, even light and keep shadows and glare off the print. The free Google PhotoScan app was designed specifically for this and does a solid job minimizing reflections.

The better your starting image, the better your result. This step is worth getting right.

Step 2: Pick your AI tool

Two tools are worth your time for most restoration jobs.

Remini is the simplest option. Upload your photo, tap Enhance, and within seconds the AI sharpens faces, reduces grain, and pulls back hidden detail. It works on your phone and is free to try. A subscription unlocks more restorations per month.

MyHeritage Photo Enhancer is web-based, free for basic work, and built specifically for old family photos. It also has a colorization feature that adds realistic color to black-and-white prints. If your photos have people in them, this one is worth starting with.

For photos with physical damage like deep scratches, tears, or missing sections, ChatGPT with a paid subscription can do more targeted repair because you can describe exactly what you want fixed.

Step 3: Run the restoration

In Remini or MyHeritage, the process is: upload, click restore, download. Done.

For ChatGPT, give it clear instructions so it knows what you are after. Here is a prompt that works:

Want to try this yourself?

I'm going to upload an old family photo that needs restoration. Please analyze what is wrong with it, including fading, scratches, discoloration, or blur, and restore it to look as clear and vivid as possible. Keep the faces looking natural and do not add anything that was not in the original photo.

Paste that in, then upload your photo directly in the same message.

Step 4: Save and share

Download the restored version at the highest resolution available. A shared Google Photos album is the easiest way to let family members see the results without sending individual files to everyone.

The reaction tends to catch people off guard. A photo that was barely recognizable comes back looking like something worth printing and framing. Which, of course, is exactly what it is.

This week: find one old photo, scan it with your phone, and run it through MyHeritage Photo Enhancer. It is free, takes five minutes, and the results will speak for themselves.

(Fair warning: you will almost certainly end up doing the entire box.)
