An AI Company Caught Its Own Tech Running a Dating Scam. Here Is What It Saw.
Anthropic published a threat intelligence report this month describing a scam network its investigators tracked in April 2026. A China-based studio had built more than 20 dating apps, all running the same playbook: AI personas that flirted and kept the conversation going for weeks.
Over a two-week window, the operation ran more than 4,700 distinct AI personas, which messaged at least 25,000 real people and generated roughly 2.36 million messages. Each persona kept about five people talking at once. Real humans stepped in only for what AI still cannot fake: a live video call, or a social media follow-back to look legitimate.
This is not AI going rogue. Anthropic caught this because it was looking for exactly this kind of misuse. The same technology that makes a fake profile convincing is now good enough at catching one in this much detail.
The catch: Detection does not mean prevention. This network got caught. The next one is still running somewhere.
The FBI's most recent numbers put romance scam losses among Americans 60 and older at $584 million in 2025, third-costliest behind investment and tech support fraud. Not rare. Not new. Just faster and cheaper to run now.
A profile that always has time to talk, never gets tired, never wants to meet, and slowly starts talking about money is not a red flag. It is the whole pattern. Reverse image search the photo. A real match will not mind a video call early on.

Let AI Plan a Full Week of Outfits, Weather Included
Rowan Cheung, who writes The Rundown AI, built himself a full digital wardrobe with try-on photos and weather-based daily picks. That is more project than most of us need. But the core idea scales down nicely: hand ChatGPT your closet and this week's forecast, and let it decide what you are wearing before you have had coffee.
✓ Photograph five to seven pieces from your closet, one item per photo, good lighting.
✓ Upload the photos to ChatGPT and describe your week: work, errands, anything dressier.
✓ Ask it to check this week's weather for your city and build one outfit per day around it.
✓ Ask for a photo of yourself wearing each outfit, if you want to see it before committing.
✓ Adjust anything that misses. Tell it what you skipped and why, so tomorrow's pick improves.
Try This With AI What it does: Turns a pile of closet photos and a weather forecast into seven ready-to-wear outfits, no decision fatigue required.
"Act as a personal stylist. Here are photos of [number] pieces from my closet. My week looks like this: [describe your days]. Check this week's weather for [your city] and build one complete outfit per day using only what I've shown you. Tell me which piece pairs with which, and flag any day where the forecast changes what I should wear."

If it does not work: The try-on photo of you wearing the outfit is the part most likely to look off. Independent testing has found ChatGPT's image tool weaker than some competitors at placing a real person into a new scene without changing their face slightly. Expect to regenerate once or twice, or skip the photo and just use the written outfit list.
What this doesn't fix: Uploading full-body photos of yourself is worth thinking about before you do it. Keep them off public devices, and know what you are comfortable putting into any AI tool.
